“…A highly valued aspect of this course is the interprofessional approach to learning through a combination of peer and instructor support on application of the ICF. Consistent with current literature, adopting a biopsychosocial view on health offered by the ICF encouraged students to consider a holistic outlook when working with patients in practice by addressing their preferences, needs, and concerns according to the five domains outlined in the ICF (Bornbaum et al, 2015;Leonardi & Martinuzzi, 2009;Nguyen & Gorter, 2014). A holistic perspective can assist students in acknowledging the benefits of an interprofessional approach to care by recognizing the unique contribution of each team members in addressing the diverse needs of patients.…”

“…Bornbaum et al (2015) suggests that mentorship in the application of the ICF in practice and research is key for successful integration and utilization. This article describes the development and implementation of a new graduate-level course using the ICF to assist health professionals and graduate trainees in rehabilitation in incorporating a contemporary biopsychosocial view of health into practice and research in a tangible way.…”

“…The first is in its clinical application. Students' concerns about the time consuming nature of using the ICF may contribute to their lack of emphasis on coding and classification elements, and is consistent with findings elsewhere (Bornbaum et al, 2015;Jelsma, 2009). As practitioners become more familiar with the ICF and tools are developed to streamline documentation, the process should become less demanding, especially when applying the framework alone.…”

“…A scoping review (2001 -2011) appraising the understanding and teaching of functioning and disability in the health professions (Bornbaum et al, 2015) included 18 largely conceptual papers. Notable amongst these is the study by Reed and colleagues (2008) who included evaluation of short programs involving students.…”
