Expression analysis of serum microRNAs in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis

Abstract: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a disease of unknown etiology with considerable morbidity and mortality. Seeking informative diagnostic markers with greater clinical significance is essential for the early diagnosis of IPF. microRNAs (miRNAs or miRs) have emerged as novel serum diagnostic biomarkers for various diseases. In this study, we performed microarray analysis of the miRNA expression profile in the serum of patients with IPF compared to that of control subjects. We then performed a preliminary a… Show more

“…Levels of miR-21 and miR-155 were significantly elevated in IPF patient serum (Li et al, 2013(Li et al, , 2014, consistent with findings from the cell-based mouse and human studies discussed earlier (Pottier et al, 2009;Liu et al, 2010;Yamada et al, 2013). The upregulation of serum miR-21 was confirmed as a predictor of poor prognosis by two other groups Makiguchi et al, 2016).…”

“…The detection of specific miRNA alterations in serum samples of IPF patients suggests that miRNA could be used as a noninvasive screening tool for IPF in routine clinical practice, establishing more reliable biomarkers [126,128]. Novel treatment strategies based on epigenetic drugs, such as 5-aza-2′-deoxycytidine and decitabine [129], or exogenous administration of miRNAs, could also prove beneficial for management of IPF patients.…”

“…44 MicroRNAs have been implicated in the development of fibrosis via extracellular matrix and proliferative changes especially in liver, kidney and lung fibrotic diseases. 5,45,46 In this study, we aimed to ascertain the role of microRNAs in fibroblast function, using human pterygium as a model. Here we found miR-215, a conserved microRNA previously unreported in pterygium, to regulate cell cycling in pterygium-derived fibroblasts.…”
