Expression of adipokine ghrelin and ghrelin receptor in human colorectal adenoma and correlation with the grade of dysplasia

Abstract: BACKGROUND Ghrelin is an adipokine that plays an important role in energy balance. Expression of ghrelin and ghrelin receptor has been investigated in different tissues and tumors. Studies regarding expression of ghrelin and ghrelin receptor in colorectal tumors are scarce and no data on expression of ghrelin and its receptor in colorectal adenomas has been published. Ghrelin and ghrelin receptor were highly expressed in colon carcinoma cells while expression was decreased in less differentiated t… Show more

“…It is noteworthy that the latest genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses suggest a potential causal relationship between elevated plasma ghrelin levels and a reduced risk of GI cancer [100]. Additionally, recent studies have identified significantly higher expression of ghrelin and GHS-R in colorectal adenomas compared to that in surrounding tissues [101]. All told, further research is warranted to explore plasma ghrelin levels in the CRC population, along with their relationship to factors such as patient heterogeneity and tumor staging [102].…”

“…GHS-R1a expression was also widespread in all human tissue studied [ 92 ]. Notably, mRNA expression of ghrelin, both GHS-Rs (GHS-R1a and GHS-R1b), and GOAT is also detected in the normal colon and human liver [ 71 , 92 , 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 ]. GHS-R transcript expression was detected in human hepatocytes and activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), but not in quiescent HSCs [ 42 ].…”
