Expression of colony-stimulating factors and inflammatory cytokines in the uterus of CD1 mice during Days 1 to 3 of pregnancy

Abstract: Further, the data demonstrate the expression of genes for CSF-1, GM-CSF, IL-1\g=a\,IL-1\g=b\, IL-6 and TNF-\g=a\ is induced in the uterus during mating.

“…A surge of proinflammatory cytokines was observed in the stromal tissue of the endometrium within 1 h of insemination in mice (Sanford et al 1992, Robertson et al 1998 as well as in pigs (Rozeboom et al 1998, O'Leary et al 2004. The mRNA expression of IL1B, IL6, and leukemia inhibitory factor were increased 2-3-fold in the endometrium after stimulation with seminal plasma (Gutsche et al 2003).…”

“…The elevated expression of TNF-a in the placenta and amniotic fluid has also been associated with pregnancy disorders such as spontaneous resorption in mice (Gendron et al 1990;Tangri and Raghupathy 1993) and spontaneous recurrent abortion (Lea et al 1997(Lea et al , 1998 and preeclampsia (Vince et al 1995;Kilpatrick 1999) in humans. Uterine TNF-a mRNA and protein is first detected at day 1 of pregnancy and its presence at a basal level appears to be necessary for successful pregnancy in the mouse (Sanford et al 1992;De et al 1993).…”

“…Contrary to expectation, blocking ADM action at 1.5 hpc did not increase leukocyte and macrophage infiltrations in the uterus, which are signs of inflammation in response to semen [Marinoni et al 2007] or semen proteins [Sanford et al 1992;Robertson et al 1996]. ADM is known to have an early inflammatory effect by increasing lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in macrophages [Wong et al 2005].…”
