Expression of cytokeratins in granulosa cell tumors and ovarian carcinomas

Abstract: One of the problems in histopathology of ovarian tumors is differential diagnosis between the poorly differentiated carcinomas and granulosa cell tumors of the sarcomatoid type. Hence we evaluated the expression of various cytokeratins (CK 1-19; CK 10, 13, 14, 15, 19; CK 8, 18, 19; CK HMW 1, 5, 10, 11; CK 8; CK 1-19 Stähli; CK AE1/AE3) immunohistochemically in 53 ovarian malignancies (11 of them poorly differentiated carcinomas and 12 granulosa cell tumors). CK HMW was not detected in granulosa cell tumors, an… Show more

“…From these findings, the epithelial cells that are desmin-positive may reveal a coelomic epithelium origin. On the other hand, a positive immunoreaction for AE1/AE3 is known not only in epithelial tumors but also in sex cord-stromal tumors [1,9,12,14], while in the present study a positive immunoreaction was also recognized in many types of sex cord-stromal tumors except the palisade type. From these findings, desmin was considered to be more useful than AE1/AE3 to distinguish sex-cord stromal tumors from epithelial tumors.…”

“…Canine ovarian tumors, because of their particular structures such as granulosa cell cord and/or cortical tubules, show complicated histology. Therefore, immunohistochemistry will be an effective tool to provide further characterization of their tumor types, especially when using PLAP, desmin and S100 besides cytokeratin [1,7,9,12,14] and inhibin α [8,16], which have already been reported in human and/or dog. The present results may contribute to detailed understanding of the canine ovarian structure and to better aid in the diagnosis.…”

“…In this study we found no reaction for HMW cytokeratins in any type of ovarian neoplasm, except for a moderate reaction in a few cells of one serous cystadenocarcinoma, which is in contrast to the results of other investigators who found positivity for HMW cytokeratins in carcinomas (7,12). Using LMW cytokeratins we found a reaction in all the epithelial ovarian tumors examined, which is in accordance with the results of others (2, 6,12).…”

“…However, the SHML histiocytes do not stain for CD1a and dendritic markers such as CD21, CD23, or CD35 5,6 . Also, as in our case, the absence of expression of markers such as CK AE1/AE3 helps differentiate renal RDD from carcinoma with epithelial origin such as ovarian or renal parenchymal tumors 12,13 .…”
