Expression of D1 and D2 Dopamine Receptors in the Hypothalamus and Pituitary during the Turkey Reproductive Cycle: Colocalization with Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide

Abstract: The regulation of avian prolactin (PRL) secretion and PRL gene expression is influenced by hypothalamic vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), the PRL-releasing factor in avian species. Recent evidence indicates that D1 and D2 dopamine (DA) receptors play a pivotal role in VIP and PRL secretion. The differential expression of DA receptors located on hypothalamic VIP neurons and anterior pituitary cells may affect the degree of prolactinemia observed during the turkey reproductive cycle. The… Show more

“…DA exerts stimulatory effects on PRL secretion via the D 1 DA receptor subtype, whereas it exerts inhibitory effects via the D 2 DA receptor subtype (Al Kahtane et al, 2003;Chaiseha et al, 1997Chaiseha et al, , 2003. In turkeys, high expression of D 1 DA receptor mRNA is found in the hypothalamus of hyperprolactinemic incubating hens and in the pituitary glands of laying hens, whereas high expression of D 2 DA receptor mRNA is observed in the pituitary glands of hypoprolactinemic photorefractory hens Schnell et al, 1999).…”

“…Chaiseha et al (2003) cloned cDNA of the DRD2 gene in turkeys and pointed out the associations between DRD2 gene and production and hatching traits. Similarly, Xu et al (2011a;2011b) studied the g.5841629T>C polymorphism on DRD2 gene and found a significant association between first laying age and total egg production in chickens at 300 days of age.…”

“…One system involves chicken gonadotropin releasing hormone-I (cGnRH-I or GnRH) and the subsequent secretion of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH; GnRH/FSH-LH system). A further system involves vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and the subsequent secretion of prolactin (PRL; VIP/PRL system) with both systems influenced by dopamine (DA) (Bhatt et al, 2003;Chaiseha et al, 2003).…”
