“…Correspondingly, previous reports have shown that the presence of survivin is associated with poor survival among patients with colorectal cancer (Kawasaki et al, 1998), non small-cell lung cancer (Monzo et al, 1999), breast cancer (Tanaka et al, 2000) and neuroblastoma (Adida et al, 1998). In our study on 84 patients with oesophageal SCC, we now show that nuclear survivin protein is expressed in 80% of these tumours, thereby confirming and extending earlier results on mRNA expression of survivin in 51 oesophageal SCC patients (Kato et al, 2001). Furthermore, we could differentiate between cytoplasmic and nuclear localisation of survivin protein expression and were the first to show a translocation of survivin during carcinogenesis.…”

“…Expression of survivin protein is highly correlated with more aggressive forms of neuroblastoma (Adida et al, 1998) and oral and skin squamous cell carcinoma (Lo Muzio et al, 2001), and poor survival in patients with neuroblastoma (Adida et al, 1998), colorectal cancer (Kawasaki et al, 1998), nonsmall-cell lung cancer (Monzo et al, 1999), breast cancer (Tanaka et al, 2000) and increasing rates of recurrence in bladder cancer (Sherr and Roberts, 1995). By investigating mRNA expression of survivin, Kato et al (2001) found a significant correlation with a poorer prognosis and a worse response to chemotherapy in oesophageal cancer. Nevertheless, the expression and function of the survivin protein in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is yet to be determined.…”

“…In this study, we demonstrated that survivin was not detected in the gastric mucosa from normal control subjects whereas the adjacent non-tumour gastric mucosa of survivin-positive tumours occasionally expressed survivin. This finding is in keeping with those found in colorectal and oesophageal cancer where survivin expression was demonstrated in adjacent normal tissues (Sarela et al, 2000;Kato et al, 2001). Past epidemiological studies revealed that first-degree relatives have an approximately three-fold increase in risk of developing gastric carcinoma, suggesting the existence of a genetic susceptibility to cancer (Zanghieri et al, 1990;La Vecchia et al, 1992).…”

“…22 Survivin expression, nuclear in distribution by immunohistochemistry, and/or by RT-PCR is reported to be associated with unfavorable histology and aggressive disseminated disease in endometrial and ovarian carcinoma. 10,23 The overall survival in pulmonary non-small-cell carcinoma, 24 esophageal carcinoma, 25,26 gliomas, 27 soft-tissue sarcoma, 28 squamous laryngeal carcinoma, 29 and endometrial carcinoma 10 is significantly decreased in patients with neoplasms expressing survivin as compared to those with no expression. Disease-free survival is significantly decreased in patients with malignant melanoma, 30 and recurrence rate is increased in patients with neuroblastoma 31 when survivin is present in the neoplasm.…”
