Expression of the cancer stem cell markers ABCG2 and OCT-4 in right-sided colon cancer predicts recurrence and poor outcomes

Abstract: Right-sided colon cancer (RCC) has a poorer prognosis and a higher relapse rate than left-sided colon cancer (LCC). Like cancer stem cells (CSCs), RCC cells cannot be fully eradicated and are often involved in relapse or metastasis. Because CSCs may be linked with poor outcomes, CSC markers may have prognostic value in RCC. ATP-binding cassette sub-family G member 2 (ABCG2) and OCT-4 (also known as POU5F1) are among the most useful markers for CSC identification. We therefore examined the malignant behavior of… Show more

“…The discovery of cancer stem cells and their therapy resistance as well as their self-renewal capacity has driven the attention towards this peculiar cell population. This specific subset of tumor cells has been shown to be prognostic for patients[ 28 , 29 ]. So far, CRC stem cells have been reported to be enriched for specific surface markers such as CD133, EphB2 high , EpCAM high , CD44 + , CD166 + , ALDH + , LGR5 + and CD44v6 +[30] .…”

“…On the other hand, using an online transcriptome-level validation tool for predictive biomarkers [52], we found that ABCG2, associated with resistance to chemo-and radiotherapy [53] and RUNX2, which has been shown to chemosensitize breast cancer cells to neoadjuvant therapy [43], are more highly expressed in non-responder patients. Although not all the parameters analysed reached statistical significance, the observed trends could be corroborated using other probes available in the tool (data not shown).…”

“…That can be conceder as an environmental selective pressure, will eliminate cells which not capable of responding to it, leaving those with ABCG2 expression. The presence of this protein contributes to cell resistant to unfavorable stress render tumors capable or recurrent [33,34]. The aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) is super-family of isoenzymes have an important function in protecting normal stem cells [35].…”
