Expression of transforming growth factor-β and insulin-like growth factor in molar and placental tissues

Abstract: The semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was employed to detect the expression of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) in complete hydatidiform mole, normal first-trimester villi, the normal term placenta (after vaginal/abdominal deliver) and the preeclamptic placenta at term. The expression of IGF-I mRNA was seen in all five tissues, but its level was much lower in the term placental tissues with preeclampsia than in other tissues. The con… Show more

“…TGF-β3 mRNA was expressed in complete hydatidiform mole (CHM), normal first-trimester villi, the normal term placenta (after vaginal/abdominal deliver) and the preeclamptic placenta at term, while TGF-β1 and TGF-β2 mRNA were not detected; and TGF-β3 expression was higher in CMH than normal first-trimester villi (the expression levels of TGF-β3 in the preeclamptic placenta and the normal placenta after cesarean birth were higher than in the placenta after vaginal delivery). 120 Another study of partial hydatidiform moles (PHM), complete hydatidiform moles, and choriocarcinoma, using nonhydropic spontaneous abortions as controls, concurs with TGF-β3 expression in all groups with the highest level in CHM and choriocarcinoma, being stronger in complete moles than that of choriocarcinomas although difference was not significant, and for TGF-β1 expression was highest in controls, and reduced in PHM, CHM and choriocarcinoma, the last with a minimum value. 121 Summarizing, TGF-β1/2 expression is downregulated while for TGF-β3 is up-regulated in GTD.…”

“…Some studies showed that low TGF-β levels increase the probability of preterm birth in women [123][124][125]. Besides, TGF-β3 was increased in people with gestational trophoblastic disease, suggesting that TGF-β3 may be significantly involved in the process of gestational trophoblastic disease [126,127].…”

“…TGF-b is expressed on decidua of normal trophoblast cells, molar pregnancies, and choriocarcinoma patients (78,79) . Normal EVT cell functions, such as proliferation, migration, and invasion, are controlled by decidua-derived TGF-b, whereas choriocarcinoma cell lines are resistant to the antiproliferative and antiinvasive effect of TGF-b (80) .…”
