Expressive Query Construction through Direct Manipulation of Nested Relational Results

Abstract: Despite extensive research on visual query systems, the standard way to interact with relational databases remains to be through SQL queries and tailored form interfaces. This makes the power of relational databases largely inaccessible to non-programmers. This thesis proposes a solution, in two parts. The first contribution of this thesis is a solution to the visual query language problem, that is, the problem of letting end users construct arbitrary database queries through a graphical user interface. We prop… Show more

“…However, this approach loses the scalability benefits of relational databases. Bakke et al [6], [5], [4] support joins by depicting relations using a nested relational model. Liu et al [26] use spreadsheet operations to specify single-block SQL queries; this effort is essentially a replacement for visual query builders.…”

“…Microsoft Excel 24 is a widely-used tool to prepare data for analysis and gaining insight into data. A central feature of Excel is the direct manipulation interface [48] where users can interact with the table to manipulate the dataset (e.g. selecting columns and/ or rows, right-clicking for options).…”

“…The 1463 rows CSV dataset 47 is selected because of its suitability to run and test statistical functionality and features that are implemented as part of the visual data profiling approach. The dataset is originally used for testing purposes for the Datalib statistical library and Vega visualizations 48 . In terms of demonstrating visual data profiling capabilities, some attribute values have been removed to introduce missing value anomalies in the dataset.…”
