Extended coagulation profile of children with Long Covid: a prospective study

Abstract: Emerging data suggests that endotheliopathy changes can be associated with post covid condition (PCC) in adults. Research on the matter in children is lacking. We analyzed an extended coagulation profile including biomarkers of endothelial damage in children with PCC and compared it with a control group of children that fully recovered post- SARS-CoV-2 infection. A case-control study enrolling children below 18 years of age with previous microbiologically confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in a pediatric post-covi… Show more

“…study for similar reasons, and LDH levels were still significantly higher in PCS compared to non‐PCS cases (SMD = 0.36; 95% CI: 0.13–0.60), with reduced but moderate heterogeneity ( I 2 = 71%, p < 0.01). For D‐dimer, we omitted the study of Di Gennaro et al 29 . due to possible source of funnel plot asymmetry.…”

“…Given current evidence, researchers have begun investigating coagulation 26 and organ perfusion also in children, as this population can also develop PCC, although less frequently than adults 27,28 . In a previous case report, we highlighted that a child with unexplained chronic symptoms and CPET abnormalities had evidence of lung perfusion defects 7 .…”

“…Disorders in coagulation system such as myocardial infarction and thrombotic complications that affect both venous and arterial systems occur in COVID‐19 29,30 . The coagulopathy conditions of COVID‐19 are not only limited to the primary course of the disease and could be during post‐infection or long COVID‐19 conditions 31 . These coagulation disorders are due to excessive induction of inflammation, disturbing gas exchange, immobilization and dissemination of intravascular coagulation (DIC) 26,27,32 .…”
