Extended Digital Image Correlation Method for Mapping Multiscale Damage in Concrete

Abstract: This paper presents an extended digital image correlation (EDIC) method for mapping multiscale damage in concrete. The EDIC method is developed based on the distance transformation algorithm, which extends the capability of current digital image correlation (DIC) method in detecting micro damage. Applications of the EDIC in mapping multiscale damage in concrete specimens are given in this paper, which proves the capability of the EDIC in detecting multiscale damage in concrete. This novel EDIC technology can b… Show more

“…DIC technology can establish the displacement field and strain field of the specimen surface by using a camera and receiving surface images of the specimen. Numerous experiments on specimens of other shapes have demonstrated the capacity of DIC for the study of the deformation characteristics and the stress variation [27,28]. For Brazilian disc specimens, Jin et al [14] captured the surface of concrete specimens using a DIC camera to evaluate the failure modes.…”

“…studied the influence of different threshold in the binarized images to best approach the width of cracks. Also, an extended digital image correlation, which includes a distance transform algorithm, was proposed by Mammand and Chen to detect microcracks in targetless concrete surfaces. However, because these works are related with the appearance of cracks, strains are the highest possible in concrete, and displacements will be at least those related with that maximum strains.…”

“…Digital image processing Digital image processing [41,42] was performed on concrete images with different damage degrees obtained in the numerical simulation of concrete damage under uniaxial compression in Section 4.1. In a grayscale image, the brightness of different colors represents a grayscale value, which can be divided into values from 0 to 255.…”
