Extended Follow-Up and Outcomes of Patients Undergoing Pancreaticoduodenectomy for Nonmalignant Disease

Abstract: Although some patients experienced symptoms that negatively impacted their daily life or had diabetic issues following surgery, the outcome of patients undergoing PD for nonmalignant indications was generally favorable. Further prospective study is warranted.

“…Of all pancreaticoduodenectomies (n ϭ 547) performed at our institution from 2006 to 2010, 83 patients (15.1%) underwent this procedure for cystic lesions of the pancreas. 3 Pancreatic cysts can either be benign or neoplastic, and because the malignant potential varies depending on their subtype, there has been a significant effort to establish an accurate diagnosis by using minimally invasive techniques.…”

“…Unfortunately, PD is often associated with postoperative complications, since postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is commonly encountered in these patients due to their soft pancreatic parenchyma and small pancreatic duct (8). In addition, pancreatic head resections are often associated with significant attenuation in pancreatic endocrine and exocrine function (9). Transduodenal ampullectomy and pancreaspreserving duodenectomy are operations that have been used for resecting duodenal lesions and have been reported to have a lower morbidity and mortality than PD (10).…”
