Extended horn gears in 3D maypole braiding

Abstract: This article presents the theoretical background for the arrangement of horn gears in maypole braiding machines in order to act as equivalent larger gears. The theoretical analysis is verified with numerical simulation and experiments. After review about the state of the art, an analysis of the process for one specific configuration of horn gears is given. This analysis demonstrates how a set of horn gears can be arranged to work as an equivalent to a larger one horn gear. The braiding equation is checked as r… Show more

“…Based on this software, a theory concerning the consideration of a set of horn gears as an extended horn gear is developed and tested in order to obtain the type of the structure, defined by its floating length. 32 With the exception of this systematic investigation and the rules for the arranging carriers, the authors did not find any other published research about the principle rules for preparation of sequences for the production of 3D braids.…”

“…In reality, if only a machine with 4 × 4 horn gears is available, none of these solutions can be applied directly. The only solution is the application of the theory of the extended horn gears, 32 where the path of the carrier is generated as a composite curve around several gears. For the current case, it will mean that for the carrier, which has to be moved, a path has to be found with a length of 5, 9, or (x * 4 – 1) slots.…”

“…The application of ropes for daily tying, tying, bundling, and wrapping 2 is extensive, such as various ropes used in textiles, surgical ropes in the medical and health fields, ropes for industrial hanging, and various engineering composite pipes. 3–5 Binding rope of various materials involves complex mechanical behavior, and the interaction of the materials with each other maintains the rope’s structural form, which involves the rope's tension state and the bundled material's tightening effect. 6 The end of the rope is tensioned by tension, which induces deformation of the rope body.…”

“…The machine development and the carrier arrangement are done by trial and error, and the fundamental theoretical background is not well developed. 2 The monograph written by Kyosev 3,4 introduced the principles of the rotary braiding process and the structures of various rotary braiding machines. Other studies focused on the mechanical analysis of yarns and the structural designs of mechanisms, tracks and carriers.…”
