“…Thus, the exact burden of E. coli diarrhea among the hospitalized children across India especially Northeast India is still unclear. In the present study, the samples were collected from Mizoram, located in the North Eastern part of India adjoining to Myanmar and Bangladesh where limited study has been conducted on the prevalence of diarrhea associated with DEC [15, 21]. This is the first report on an in-depth study on the prevalence of EPEC and EIEC associated with diarrhea in children less than 5 years of age in North-eastern Indian population.…”

“…Ahmed and Shimamoto reported the presence of plasmid‐mediated quinolone resistance genes, qnr B and qnr S, in 12.0% of O157 isolates from meat products in Egypt (Ahmed & Shimamoto, ). Recent studies reported several β‐lactamase genes, such as bla CTX‐M , bla AmpC , bla CMY‐1 , bla TEM and bla DHA‐1 in STEC serotypes O26:H11, O64, O91:H14, O106:H18, O111:H8 and O157, recovered from humans and animals; some of these β‐lactamase genes were encoded on plasmids (Arvand et al, ; Dutta et al, ; Ishii et al, ; Iweriebor et al, ; Jost et al, ; Valat et al, ). Seven O157 isolates harbouring bla CMY‐2 , obtained from clinical samples at the Osaka Prefecture, Japan, had antibiotic resistance genes encoded on a IncI1 plasmid that has high transmissibility across bacterial species (Kawahara et al, ).…”

“…The major reservoir of the STEC strains in the nature is the intestinal content of cattle and other small ruminants (Kaper et al ). The occurrence of STEC are also detected in pigs, poultry, soil and water (Diallo et al ; Dutta et al ; Mandakini ; Kusumoto et al ; Kylla et al ).…”

“…Consequently, resistance may be promoted in STEC commensally present in the intestinal tracts of animals and humans (Ramachandra et al ; King et al ). Although, STEC isolates are not considered as reservoir of extended spectrum β‐lactamases (ESBLs), a handful of reports have been published on the association of STEC isolates with ESBL/beta‐lactamase genes (Ishii et al ; Buvens et al ; Valat et al , ; Dutta et al ; Torpdahl et al ; Lupindu et al ; Nagy et al ; Mandakini ; Kusumoto et al ).…”
