Background Embodied conversational agents (ECAs) have the potential to stimulate actual use of eHealth apps. An ECA’s design influences the user’s perception during short interactions, but daily life evaluations of ECAs in health care are scarce. Objective This is an exploratory, long-term study on the design of ECAs for eHealth. The study investigates how patients perceive the design of the ECA over time with regard to the ECA’s characteristics (friendliness, trustworthiness, involvement, expertise, and authority), small talk interaction, and likeliness of following the agent’s advice. Methods We developed an ECA within an eHealth self-management intervention for patients with both chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and chronic heart failure (CHF), which we offered for 4 months. Patients rated 5 agent characteristics and likeliness of following the agent’s advice before use and after 3 and 9 weeks of use. The amount of patients’ small talk interaction was assessed by log data. Lastly, individual semistructured interviews were used to triangulate results. Results Eleven patients (7 male and 4 female) with COPD and CHF participated (median age 70 years). Patients’ perceptions of the agent characteristics did not change over time (P>.05 for all characteristics) and only 1 participant finished all small talk dialogues. After 3 weeks of use, the patients were less likely to follow the agent’s advice (P=.01). The agent’s messages were perceived as nonpersonalized and the feedback as inappropriate, affecting the agent’s perceived reliability. Conclusions This exploratory study provides first insights into ECA design for eHealth. The first impression of an ECA’s design seems to remain during long-term use. To investigate future added value of ECAs in eHealth, perceived reliability should be improved by managing users’ expectations of the ECA’s capabilities and creating ECA designs fitting individual needs. The research focused on the user interface of the Maxim application, a ride-hailing service in Indonesia facing usability challenges compared to its competitors, such as Gojek, Grab, and inDrive. The study aimed to identify user issues and propose alternative interface designs to enhance usability. The User-Centered Design (UCD) approach was adopted, involving two iterative phases that yielded high-fidelity designs. Through online surveys and interviews, 77 problem categories were identified, adhering to Usability Heuristic principles, and 93 design solutions were crafted based on Shneiderman's Eight Golden Rules of Interface Design. Subsequently, the design solutions were evaluated through moderated usability testing (UT) and the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire distribution. The second iteration's UT results indicated improved success rates, reduced task completion times, higher SUS scores, and positive user feedback on ease of use. In conclusion, this research improved the application's usability and offered valuable recommendations for further enhancements and future investigations.

Digitalized smart cities employ user-centric smart living solutions to study how big data analytics and mobile integrated technology (MIT) affect user satisfaction, technology adoption, and quality of life. To show how smart city residents may benefit from this technology. The quantitative technique used surveys, feedback, and sentiment analysis. These methodologies revealed MIT and big data analytics' influence. Research: smart city services should be user-centered. Research suggests big data analytics enhance urban living. With big data, smart cities manage resources, transportation, sustainability, and more. Furthermore, big data analytics-enabled data-driven decision-making continuously raises user satisfaction and rates of technology adoption. In tackling urban issues such as healthcare accessibility and traffic congestion, MIT solutions prove to be effective tools that also foster economic growth in smart cities. The financial gains underscore MIT's capacity to promote prosperity in digitally advanced smart city settings. Moreover, the study advances user-centered design theories, technology adoption, and urban planning. It supports accepted theories and emphasizes the importance of user participation in design, technology acceptance, and the financial benefits of smart city technology. The study's results provide empirical support for the claim that combining big data analytics with MIT greatly enhances user enjoyment, adoption of new technologies, and the general quality of life in digitalized smart cities. Urban planners, legislators, and technology developers can benefit greatly from the theoretical and practical implications presented, encouraging the creation of user-centric smart life solutions in the rapidly changing field of smart cities.
