Extension and Validation of an Advanced Integral Equation Model for Bistatic Scattering From Rough Surfaces

Abstract: Abstract-This paper deals with the modeling of bistatic scattering from a randomly rough surface. An advanced integral equation model is presented by giving its general framework of model developments, model expressions, and predictions of bistatic scattering for various surface parameters. Extension work to improve the model accuracy is also reported in more detail. In particular, the transition function for the Fresnel reflection coefficient is in more general form. Model predictions are illustrated, demonst… Show more

“…The factor in Equation 9is explicitly given by: The AIEM, a widely used model [33,34], is selected as a working model for characterizing backscattering from multiscale sea surface. For self-containment, only the final expressions of single surface scattering, which is applicable to the rough surface with the RMS surface slope less than 0.4, is given in Equation (9).…”

“…Through Equations (9)- (12), the subscripts q and p denote the received and transmitted polarizations, respectively; σ is the RMS height of the surface. The Kirchhoff field coefficient f qp and the complementary scattered fields propagating through the upward (+) and downward (−) directions in both the upper and lower medium F(±), G(±) are explicitly given in references [32][33][34][35]. In this context, the parameter K corresponds to a specific spectral component of ocean surface roughness spectrum model and is determined by incident frequency and radar observation geometry.…”

“…The research on soil moisture monitoring by microwave remote sensing has been developed for more than forty years. The retrieval of bare soil moisture based on SAR has developed from the simplest linear fitting method [11] to the widely used advanced integrated equation model (AIEM) [12][13][14][15]. In addition, many semi-empirical soil moisture inversion models (Oh [16][17][18], Dubois [19], Chen [20], Shi [21], etc.…”
