Extension of the energetic particle transport kick model in TRANSP to multiple fast ion species

Abstract: Alfvénic instabilities (AEs) are well known to cause enhanced transport of energetic particles (EPs) in fusion devices. Most studies until now have focused on characterizing and understanding AE stability in single-species plasmas heated by Neutral Beams (NB), where deuterium is typically used as both main plasma species and NB fuel. As the fusion community moves toward fusion reactors that target burning plasma conditions, such as ITER, the single-species picture breaks down. Burning plasmas, which will use a… Show more

“…The JET DTE2 campaign is now complete, and analysis of data from the afterglow and other scenarios has started in order to study the effects of alpha particles on AE stability. Preliminary observations suggest that alpha drive is weak for the afterglow scenarios in DTE2 and no clear evidence of strong alpha-driven AEs has been observed [32], in qualitative agreement with the main conclusions of this work on linear AE stability, as well as with previous work [7,8].…”

“…It also includes the so-called kick model, a physics-based, reduced model for resonant fast ion transport by MHD instabilities, in particular, such as sawtooth and AE instabilities [12][13][14]. This model has recently been extended to deal with multiple fast ion species from NBI and fusion reactions [8]. In addition to TRANSP, the NOVA/NOVA-K [15,16] and ORBIT [17] codes are used to provide information on the mode spectrum and resonant interaction between fast ions and AE modes.…”
