Extensive 200-Million-Year-Old Continental Flood Basalts of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province

Abstract: The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) is defined by tholeiitic basalts that crop out in once-contiguous parts of North America, Europe, Africa, and South America and is associated with the breakup of Pangea. 40Ar/39Ar and paleomagnetic data indicate that CAMP magmatism extended over an area of 2.5 million square kilometers in north and central Brazil, and the total aerial extent of the magmatism exceeded 7 million square kilometers in a few million years, with peak activity at 200 million years ago. “…Speciation of the two cephalochordates-B. floridae lives along the Atlantic coast of America, whereas B. lanceolatum is found along the Atlantic coast of Europe and in the Mediterranean sea (Poss and Boschung 1996)-could have been a consequence of the drifting of major land masses, beginning around 200 MYA from the Pangea (Marzoli et al 1999). Therefore, it could be argued that present similarities in the two amphioxus species would not be based on recent divergence but, rather, on the absence of major morphological changes during the last 200 million years (Myr) or thereabouts.…”

“…This magmatism makes part of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) defined by around 200 Ma-aged tholeiitic basalts and diabases, cropping out from previously united parts of North America, Europe, Africa and South America (Marzoli et al 1999). The thick intrusions brought about uplifting of the formations of the Paleozoic basins, being more significant in Gurupá and Purus arches, and in the Carauari and Monte Alegre highs, and larger relative subsidence in the central area of the basins due to the weight exerted on those areas by the wider sill thickness (Fig.…”
