External rotation elastic bands at the lower limb decrease rearfoot eversion during walking: a preliminary proof of concept

Abstract: BackgroundReducing rearfoot eversion is a commonly desired effect in clinical practice to prevent or treat musculoskeletal dysfunction. Interventions that pull the lower limb into external rotation may reduce rearfoot eversion.ObjectiveThis study investigated whether the use of external rotation elastic bands, of different levels of stiffness, will decrease rearfoot eversion during walking. We hypothesized that the use of elastic bands would decrease rearfoot eversion and that the greater the band stiffness, t… Show more

“…Similarly, but from a proximal to distal joint direction, reduced hip stiffness might also modulate midfoot stiffness. 18 More specifically, reduced hip stiffness has been related to increased foot pronation, 2 which, in the long term, might contribute to loosening of the midfoot tissues and consequently reduce their stiffness. The relationship between hip and midfoot stiffness demonstrated by the present study should be considered in clinical settings during the assessment and implementation of interventions designed to modify these tissues' mechanical properties and related movement patterns, because injuries such as patellofemoral and hip osteoarthritis can be influenced by distal and proximal factors at the hip and foot.…”

“…by reducing rearfoot eversion). 17 Lemgruber ® elastic tubing (LET) is an affordable type of elastic tubing that has been used in exercise training programs with positive effects on peripheral joint muscle force and functional exercise capacity in healthy adults 18 as well as in patients with chronic lung diseases. 1,19,20 Despite their potential benefits, there is only limited information regarding the mechanical properties of LET, such as details about the reproducibility of repeated elongations, or the maximal elongation considered safe.…”
