External Validity in Randomised Controlled Trials of Acupuncture for Osteoarthritis Knee Pain

Abstract: Objectives To assess two aspects of the external validity of acupuncture research for osteoarthritis knee pain and determine the common acupoints and treatment parameters used. Methods The external validity of 16 randomised controlled trials (RCTs) was investigated using a scale consisting of two aspects: reporting and performance. The reporting aspect included acupuncturist's background, study location, treatment detailed, patient characteristics, positive trial results, adverse effects and between-group stat… Show more

“…The differential increased in the levels of acupoint sensitization of GB34 and EX-LE2, as opposed to that of BL40, are in agreement with the current acupoint selection for knee osteoarthritis in acupuncture [ 27 28 ]. In addition, and as mentioned before, the function of acupoints involves being both a reflector of disease severity and a physical point to treating disorders.…”

“…This is particularly relevant for trials of KOA, since the main outcomes are often patient centred (such as pain, disability, quality of life and global perceived effect) and subjective. 19 …”

“…Therefore, in this study, knee OA was chosen as the carrier for acupoint sensitization. In particular, the treatment of knee OA with acupuncture is primarily through several acupoints (eg, GB34 and ST36) surrounding the knee [38]. These two acupoints were selected as the target acupoints in this study to better clarify the structural changes of microcirculation during acupoint sensitization.…”
