Extinction and Outbreaks Accompany Fragmentation of a Reptile Community

Abstract: Land clearing depletes and fragments habitat, resulting in the loss of biodiversity. Corridors of native vegetation can ameliorate the impacts of land clearing by reducing isolation of remnant vegetation. However the effectiveness of linear remnants as corridors or connecting habitat is influenced by remnant size and condition. In central New South Wales, Australia, 84–95% of native vegetation has been cleared, with remnants occurring as isolated reserves and interconnecting strips beside roads and paddocks. D… Show more

“…At least 28% of the Earth's terrestrial and freshwater habitats have been converted to human-dominated uses [Hoekstra, 2005] and other habitats have been severely degraded, leaving many reptiles isolated in pockets of remnant habitat that may have limited or no connectivity to other suitable areas [Driscoll, 2004;Berry et al, 2005]. Hence, many populations of reptiles with TSD are now less able to shift their distributions to remain in suitable climatic envelopes, as may have been a response to past changes in climate.…”

“…The role of the landscape for reptiles has been largely discussed (Blouin-Demers & Weatherhead, 2001;Cardozo et al, 2007;Driscoll, 2004;Luiselli & Capizzi, 1997;Mac Nally & Brown, 2001;Marchand & Litvaitis, 2004;Stow & Sunnucks, 2004). However, the novelty of our approach lies in the importance of landscape conservation to the maintenance of ecological interactions between lizard sister species.…”

“…Agricultural expansion, intensification and climate change are considered primary causes of reptile and amphibian declines worldwide (Fabricius et al 2003, Driscoll 2004, Whitfield et al 2007, Brown et al 2008, Ribeiro et al 2009, Sinervo et al 2010. To address this issue, a number of agri-environment schemes (AES) have been developed around the world, whereby billions of dollars are spent annually (Donald and Evans 2006) in an attempt to integrate biodiversity conservation with production in agricultural landscapes Sutherland 2003, Kleijn et al 2006).…”
