Extract of Herba Anthrisci cerefolii: Chemical Profiling and Insights into Its Anti-Glioblastoma and Antimicrobial Mechanism of Actions

Abstract: Anthriscus cerefolium (L.) Hoffm. is a plant traditionally used around the globe since antiquity. Although widely used in many traditional medicines in different cultures, from the scientific point of view it is poorly investigated. Glioblastoma, a tumor type with poor prognosis, is the most common and lethal brain tumor in adults. Current therapeutic strategies for glioblastoma include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. On the other hand, it has been revealed that patients with cancers are highly susceptibl… Show more

“…Some of these products have anti-GBM potential alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutics[ 211 - 214 ]. Our results revealed that extracts from Anthrisci cerefolii and Ononis spinosa L. plants have anti-GBM activity[ 215 , 216 ]. Furthermore, it has been reported that nuciferine obtained from the leaves of N. nucifera Gaertn.…”

“…Natural compounds with such properties include resveratrol (affects Wnt/β-catenin, Notch and Smad-dependent TGFβ signaling) [ 134 , 254 , 312 ], DATS (decreases Wnt/β-catenin and Notch) [ 137 , 257 ], honokiol (downregulates Notch and PI3K/Akt/mTOR) [ 253 , 441 ] and garlic-derived Z-ajoene (affects Notch, Wnt and HH) [ 442 ]. In our previous work, we found that extracts from Phlomis fruticosa L., Ononis spinosa L. and Anthriscus cerefolium L. plants and bis-Bibenzyls from the Liverwort Pellia endiviifolia have anti-GBM activity in vitro [ 443 , 444 , 445 , 446 ], and future research of these extracts and compounds should decipher whether the mechanism underlying their antitumor effect involves targeting dysregulated signaling pathways in GBM. It is important to point out that targeting the same signaling pathway in GSCs and GBM tumor cells can affect diverse sets of target genes and, consequently, different cellular processes.…”

“…The previously reported flavones are all derivatives of apigenin and luteolin, including apiin (apigenin 7-apiosylglucoside) 6,7 , luteolin 7-glucoside, luteolin 7-apiosylglucoside 8 , whereas the identified flavonols are kaempferol, quercetin and isorhamnetin derivatives 7,9 . Several derivatives of quinic acid, in addition to the phenylpropanoids, where the latter compounds occur in the essential oils, have also been reported as phenolic constituents from this species 7,9,10 . These identifications were mainly based on hyphenated mass spectrometry and comparisons with available standards 7 .…”

The observed antimicrobial activity of extracts of chervil may be assigned to the content of relatively volatile compounds including the known antibiotic compound carvacrol 7,11 .…”
