Acta Geologica Polonica, 63 (3), 425−442. Warszawa.Bituminous coals and clastic rocks from the Lublin Formation (Pennsylvanian, Westphalian B) were subjected to detailed biomarker and Rock-Eval analyses. The investigation of aliphatic and aromatic fractions and Rock-Eval T max suggests that the Carboniferous deposits attained relatively low levels of thermal maturity, at the end of the microbial processes/initial phase of the oil window. Somewhat higher values of maturity in the clastic sediments were caused by postdiagenetic biodegradation of organic matter.The dominance of the odd carbon-numbered n-alkanes in the range n-C 25 to n-C 31 , high concentrations of moretanes and a predominance of C 28 and C 29 steranes are indicative of a terrigenous origin of the organic matter in the study material. This is supported by the presence of eudesmane, bisabolane, dihydro-ar-curcumene and cadalene, found mainly in the coal samples. In addition, tri-and tetracyclic diterpanes, e. g. 16β(H)-kaurane, 16β(H)-phyllocladane, 16α(H)-kaurane and norisopimarane, were identified, suggesting an admixture of conifer ancestors among the deposited higher plants. Parameters Pr/n-C 17 and R dit in the coal samples show deposition of organic matter from peat swamp environments, with the water levels varying from high (water-logged swamp) to very low (ephemeral swamp). Clastic deposits were accumulated in a flood plain environment with local small ponds/lakes. In pond/lake sediments, apart from the dominant terrigenous organic matter, research also revealed a certain quantity of algal matter, indicated, i.a., by the presence of tricyclic triterpanes C 28 and C 29 and elevated concentrations of steranes.The Paq parameter can prove to be a useful tool in the identification of organic matter, but the processes of organic matter biodegradation observed in clastic rocks most likely influence the value of the parameter, at the same time lowering the interpretation potential of these compounds.The value of Pr/Ph varies from 0.93 to 5.24 and from 3.49 to 22.57 in the clastic sediments and coals respectively. The microbial degradation of organic matter in both type of rocks and during early stages of diagenesis is confirmed by a high concentration of hopanes, the presence of drimane homologues, bicyclic alkanes and benzohopanes. Moreover, bacteria could also have been connected with the primary input of organic matter, which is shown by the presence of e.g. C 30 neohop-13(18)-ene.

Alkyl and polynuclear aromatic thiophenes were detected in sedimentary rocks of a stratigraphic sequence from Miocene to Pliocene in Shinjo basin, Japan. C 25 Highly branched isoprenoid (HBI) thiophenes, dibenzothiophene, C 1 -and C 2 -alkyldibenzothiophenes, and benzo [b]naphto[1,2-d]thiophene were rather predominantly present. The C 25 HBI thiophenes consist of three isomers including a pair of diastereomers. They were present in sediments from the Nakawatari to the upper part of the Kusanagi Formations and absent at the middle and lower parts of the Formation. The depth profiles of their concentrations do not coincide with those of the C 25 HBI alkane concentration and bulk sulfur content in the same sediment samples. It is postulated that the C 25 HBI thiophenes and the C 25 HBI alkane were produced by the reaction of C 25 HBI alkadiene and C 25 HBI polyene, respectively, with reduced sulfur during early diagenesis. The variation in composition of the C 25 HBI thiophene isomers was observed in the sediments, suggesting that they were derived from different kinds of C 25 HBI alkadienes. The concentrations of the polynuclear aromatic thiophenes showed an increasing trend downwards the upper to middle Kusanagi Formation. Among these thiophenes dibenzothiophene and benzo [b]naphto[1,2-d]thiophene concentrations varied from 10 to 730 and 14 to 210 pmol g -1 , respectively. The depth profiles of their concentrations were different from that of the C 25 HBI thiophenes. It is likely that the polynuclear aromatic thiophene formation started from different precursors followed by different processes from those of the C 25 HBI thiophenes. diagenesis. Aromatic compounds are still poorly evaluated in geochemical studies of Brazilian oil samples. For this reason, the objective of this work was to analyze and evaluate 26 oil samples from four Brazilian sedimentary basins. Aromatic hydrocarbon fractions have been analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The results were also compared with previously evaluated saturated hydrocarbon data. Maturation parameters obtained using the 4-and 1-methyl-dibenzothiophenes and trimethyl-dibenzothiophenes led to the best results because a better grouping was observed. For this correlation, the samples were grouped by maturity degree enabling the routine use of these parameters to evaluate oil maturity levels.Keywords: biomarkers; aromatic hydrocarbon; maturity evolution. INTRODUÇÃOO petróleo é uma mistura complexa composta principalmente de hidrocarbonetos saturados, hidrocarbonetos aromáticos, resinas e asfaltenos. O estudo de suas características geoquímicas por meio da análise de biomarcadores é indispensável para a indústria petrolífera. Neste contexto, é de grande importância a avaliação de parâmetros relacionados com a geração, migração e acumulação de petróleo, a fácies estratigráfica da rocha geradora, bem como as profundidades nas quais prevalecem as condições diagenéticas ótimas para a formação do petróleo. 1,2Diversas informações podem ser obtidas a partir dos biomarcadores. O grau de evolução térmica, por exemplo, pode ser monitorado através de diferentes razões de concentrações relativas entre o isô-mero mais estável e o menos estável.2 A aromatização de compostos e a degradação térmica, onde compostos menos estáveis tendem a desaparecer em relação aos mais estáveis, permite estabelecer o grau de evolução de óleos e da matéria orgânica em sedimentos.2 Também é possível o estabelecimento de correlações óleo/óleo e óleo/rocha geradora. Óleos de origens diferentes apresentam composições geoquímicas de biomarcadores distintas, ou seja, óleos de origem marinha e/ou terrestre produzem petróleos de características diferenciadas. Em óleos de origem marinha, a matéria orgânica é proveniente basicamente de plantas aquáticas (fitoplâncton) que conferem uma composição química totalmente diferente dos petróleos de origem terrestre, onde é expressiva a contribuição de matéria orgânica proveniente de vegetais superiores. A correlação óleo/óleo requer parâmetros comumente não alterados por processos geoquímicos, tais como biodegradação, evolução e fracionamento evaporativo. 2Os hidrocarbonetos aromáticos estão entre os maiores constituintes da matéria orgânica sedimentar podendo ser utilizados como biomarcadores, assim como os hidrocarbonetos saturados, esteroides e hopanos.
