Extraction and Characterization of Fiber and Cellulose from Ethiopian Linseed Straw: Determination of Retting Period and Optimization of Multi-Step Alkaline Peroxide Process

Abstract: Flax is a commercial crop grown in many parts of the world both for its seeds and for its fibers. The seed-based flax variety (linseed) is considered less for its fiber after the seed is extracted. In this study, linseed straw was utilized and processed to extract fiber and cellulose through optimization of retting time and a multi-step alkaline peroxide extraction process using the Taguchi design of experiment (DOE). Effects of retting duration on fiber properties as well as effects of solvent concentration, … Show more

“…It is noteworthy that LO, EC, and P‐EC all exhibit hydrophobic properties, enabling the establishment of interactions between LO and the respective EC and P‐EC components via hydrophobic forces. This, in turn, expedites the encapsulation of the oil payload 34,38 . Additionally, a discerning analysis of the microcapsules formed with EC and P‐EC revealed the absence of spectral bands related to SDS, thereby substantiating the efficacy of the cleaning procedures implemented during the preparation steps.…”

“…These different cellulose ratios vary based on factors such as plant species, geographical location, and climate of the cultivation area. Although all cellulosicbased fibers share the same fundamental chemical components, the diversity in their ratios results in varied properties and behaviors in the fibers (Feleke et al 2023).…”
