Extraction and Recovery of Cerium from Rare Earth Ore by Solvent Extraction

Abstract: Rare earth elements are widely found in many minerals, some of which, such as bastnaesite, monazite, and xenotime, are of great commercial value. Cerium (Ce) is the rare earth element with the highest content in light rare earth ore. Solvent extraction is the most effective and efficient method to recover and separate Ce from other light rare earth elements. After acid leaching of rare earth minerals, leaching solution was obtained, and cerium oxide of products of high purity was obtained by extraction and str… Show more

“…The most abundant REE in the earth's upper crust is Ce (63 ppm), typically mined from naturally occurring mineral ore resources such as monazite and bastnäsite. Comparatively, CFA is almost 3 times more abundant in Ce (174 ppm) than natural resources in the earth's crust [4,53,54]. The total REE abundance in CFA was 490.5 ppm, i.e., more than twice the abundance of REEs in the earth's upper crust (183.1 ppm) [1,4,5].…”

“…Monazite, lanthanide, xenotime, bastnaesite, allanite, loparite and phosphate rocks are all rich in REEs [4]. Cerium (Ce) is the RE element with the highest concentration [2] in light RE ores, CeO 2 /∑REO in bastnaesite (REFCO 3 ) reaches 50 percent, while CeO 2 / ∑REO in monazite (REPO 4 ) reaches 45-50% [5].…”
