Extraction of alkylresorcinols from wheat bran with supercritical CO2

Abstract: 9The supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of wheat bran alkylresorcinols has been studied. 10Extractions were carried out at 40.0 MPa. The effect of particle size, static extraction 11 pretreatment with supercritical CO 2 (SC-CO 2 ) and extraction temperature on the 12 extraction kinetics was investigated. The extraction yield increased as the particle size 13 decreased and with temperature. Extraction curves present a faster and linear initial 14 extraction period followed by a slower extraction period. Based… Show more

“…This value is also of the same order as the crossover pressure usually observed in vegetable oils [22,23]. This fact can be also observed in that LCO 2 can be advantageous when working at low operating pressure, since high solubility of fish oil is obtained at low temperature, due to the mentioned retrograde solubility phenomenon, which is beneficial for capital and operating costs [10].…”

“…The hyaline layer is also known as the nucellar tissue, and it belongs to the intermediate layer of the bran. Alkylresorcinol is primarily localised in the testa layer (Rebolleda et al, 2013). The aleurone layer is the innermost layer of the bran, and it is partly shared by the endosperm.…”

“…Extraction of phenolic compounds from WB have been achieved through both conventional methods (e.g. distillation and Soxhlet extraction), and recently through advanced technologies such as micro-fluidisation, ultrasonic-assisted extraction and pressurised liquid extraction (Rebolleda et al, 2013;Wang et al, 2013;Povilaitis et al, 2015). Various processing methods such as wheat grain germination , enzymatic treatment, milling, electrostatic separation (Hemery et al, 2011), ultrafine grinding, bread making, yeast and sourdough fermentation (Coda et al, 2015) can expedite extractability or bio-accessibility of phenolic acid and other bioactive compounds in WB.…”

“…Traditional defatting using nonpolar solvents (e.g., hexane) and/or heat stabilization can negatively affect protein quality. Due to the low lipids content in wheat bran, SC-CO 2 extraction has been shown to have a fast and linear initial extraction period followed by a slower extraction period (44). The extraction time has a direct influence on the overall feasibility of a process, and thus, optimization would be needed to obtain a sufficiently low fat content with a short processing time (17).…”
