Extraction of bioactives from fruit and vegetables: State of the art and perspectives

Abstract: Fruit and vegetables are rich in bioactive compounds that contribute to the prevention of a number of degenerative diseases. These components are also present, often in even higher concentrations, in the co-products from fruit and vegetable processing. Such fact, makes these co-products an attractive source for the extraction of bioactives, turning the extraction itself into an attractive valorization strategy for these co-products. There has been recently renewed interest in extraction methods, notably with a… Show more

“…The important challenge in the recovery of phenolic compounds from fruits waste is the choice of the solvent used, which must meet the REACH characteristics (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals regulation) (Renard, 2018). Bio-based solvents, subcritical liquids, ionic liquids or (natural) deep eutectic solvents are now often used (Radosevic et al, 2016;Lima et al, 2017;Ozturk et al, 2018).…”

“…physostigmine was isolated from Physostigma venenosum and its chemical molecular base provided a template for the development of rivastigmine improving the pharmacokinetic parameters and efficacy . Thus, plants and fruits have demonstrated to be a relevant source of bioactive compounds that could contribute to reduce the risk of suffering or treat some degenerative diseases .
