Numerous traditional methods have been applied to extracting manganese from electrolytic manganese residue (EMR). However, most of them focused on the recovery of water-soluble manganese from EMR, while insoluble manganese, whose content is usually high in EMR, was generally ignored. Herein, the recovery of insoluble manganese in EMR was systematically investigated by a natural pyrite-assisted mechanochemical method. The recovery efficiency of insoluble manganese exceeded 86%, and the leaching efficiency of iron was lower than 1% under optimal conditions (the pyrite/EMR mass ratio of 4% and mechanochemical treatment at 300–500 rpm for 120 min). Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure experiments showed that after treatment the leaching concentration of manganese decreased by more than 12 times, and ammonia nitrogen decreased by 27 times, which met the regulatory discharge limit (GB/T 8978-1996). Tescan integrated mineral analyzer analysis directly confirmed that the insoluble Mn(IV) in treated EMR was completely reduced to soluble Mn(II), and iron was solidified in the forms of Fe–S-(Si–Al–O) and pyrrhotite. A potential mechanism could be that the insoluble manganese encapsulated in EMR matrix was exposed to the particle surface by the mechanochemical reaction; whereafter, the redox reaction between pyrite and insoluble Mn(IV) was facilitated by the generated crystal defects and surfaces with dangling bonds under mechanochemical action. This study provides a direction for the resource utilization of insoluble Mn(IV) in EMR and also expands the theoretical basis for exploring the reduction mechanism of pyrite-assisted mechanochemical method.

The extraction of potassium from polyhalite ore (K 2 SO 4 •MgSO 4 •2CaSO 4 •2H 2 O) can help alleviate potassium resource shortages in China. In this study, the leaching behavior of potassium extracted from polyhalite ore in water was investigated using leaching experiments and kinetic analysis. The effects of various factors, such as liquid-to-solid ratio, leaching temperature, leaching time, and polyhalite ore particle size were comprehensively studied. It was found that high temperatures improved the reaction rate and efficiency at the beginning (1−15 min) but reduced the final leaching efficiency of potassium. And this phenomenon is discussed from the aspects of the dissolution− reprecipitation of potassium, newly formed solid products during the leaching process, and leaching thermodynamics. The leaching of potassium followed the Avrami model, with an apparent activation energy of 26.29 kJ/mol. Additionally, it was determined that the mixed controlled step (surface chemical reaction and diffusion) was the controlling step during potassium leaching. This study clarified the leaching mechanism of the polyhalite in water, and the causes of hindering the leaching of potassium were analyzed. The research results can provide theoretical reference and solutions for parameter design for the enhanced leaching process and selection of leaching agents in the future.

Recovery of rare-earth elements (REEs), especially those of Dy and Nd, from Nd−Fe−B permanent magnets is crucial for sustainable development. Herein, an unsymmetrical pentanediamide extractant, N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-didecyl-3-oxapentanediamide (DMDDOPDA), was synthesized and characterized for the effective extraction of Dy(III) and Nd(III). DMDDOPDA can form coordination bonds with metal ions because of the strong electron-donating abilities of the N and O atoms. The coordination sites might be inclined toward one side during the extraction. DMDDOPDA exhibited superior extraction performance in the HNO 3 system than it did in the HCl system. The highest extraction efficiencies of Dy(III) and Nd(III) under optimal conditions were 99.9% and 99.5%, respectively, while their optimum stripping efficiencies were 100% and 85.3%, respectively. DMDDOPDA extraction of Dy(III) and Nd(III) in the four investigated diluents involved the formation of a neutral coordination complex. This study provides new insights into REE extraction using pentanediamide extractants.
