Extraction of starch from Hass avocado seeds for the preparation of biofilms

Abstract: Biofilms arise as an alternative to replace synthetic polymers, which have generated environmental pollution. The aim of this work was to extract starch from Hass avocado seeds (Persea americana Mill) to produce biofilms. Starch was extracted using the wet method and characterized by infrared spectroscopy. Moisture, ash content, gelatinization temperature, and color were determined. Two types of biofilms were produced: T1 (starch) and T2 (starch and glycerol). The colour was measured, and the films were charac… Show more

“…Moisture content is very important for all types of raw materials and other finished products in order to know the amount of water and other volatile components that will be absorbed. e moisture content of the avocado seed obtained was determined to be 12.7 ± 0.03%, which is slightly higher than the values already reported [21] but in compliance with a range of 10-14% in another reported article [22]. e starch, with a moisture content of 12.7% at room temperature, is not vulnerable to deterioration by bacteria or fungi.…”

“…This makes it a desirable resource for the creation of biofilms. With researchers globally exploring the various uses of avocado starch in the creation of biofilms, it is crucial to comprehend the intricacies of this rapidly developing field of study [5,6,7,8] Bibliometric analysis is a quantitative approach used to map and evaluate scholarly literature. It is a powerful tool for identifying patterns, collaborations, and research trends in a particular topic.…”

“…The CONACyT information agency in one of its numbers reports that researcher Carlos Constantino, a researcher from the Universidad Autónoma de Hidalgo, managed to obtain two fractions: a solid and a liquid, pectin and mucilage, identifying various applications as a food additive in everyday products 25 . In addition, there are some patents in which they use cladode as the main material 26 , MX2014014416A where it is used as an additive for a clay brick 27 , MX2015000599A in this the nopal mucilage is spray dried and used as a thickener and powder egg coating 28 , MX2010001168A which refers to the use of cladode pectin as sparkling wines 29 .…”
