Extraction of Tide Constituents by Harmonic Analysis Using Altimetry Satellite Data in the Brazilian Coast

Abstract: This paper analyzes the sea surface height dataset from the TOPEX, Jason-1, and Jason-2 satellites of a 19-yr time series in order to extract the tide harmonic constituents for the region limited by latitude 58N-358S and longitude 558-208W. The harmonic analysis results implemented here were compared with the tidal constituents estimated by three classical tidal models [i.e., TOPEX/Poseidon Global Inverse Solution 7.2 (TPXO7.2), Global Ocean Tide 4.7 (GOT4.7), and Finite Element Solution 2102 (FES2102)] and al… Show more

“…The amplitude and phase of the M 2 constituent for each along-track position were computed using least squares harmonic analysis (Daher et al, 2015;Ray & Mitchum, 1996, 1997. Although the repeated cycles of the satellite data have much longer periods than most of the principal tidal constituents (Chriswell, 2006;Ray & Mitchum, 1996;Zhao, 2014;Zhao & Alford, 2009), resulting in an aliasing problem, all three altimeter along-track data sets are long enough to separate the M 2 from the other tidal constituents (Le Provost, 2001;Zhao & Alford, 2009).…”

“…The nearest distance is at the Miri tide gauge, which is 9.14 km, and the longest distance between both points is located at the Bintulu tide gauge, which is 66.61 km. It has perceived that the maximum range between the two points is closer than that in the previous studies by Daher et al (2015) and Fu et al (2020), where the maximum ranges from both studies are 124 km and 77 km, respectively. The RSS values of eight tidal constituents between two models (SDTC and DTU10) and each tide gauge station are computed and presented in Figure 5.…”

“…The term was first introduced by Van der Stok [54] with three tidal types, which were further increased to four by Courtier [55]. A similar method has been used in some specific regions by Parker [56], Amin [57], Daher et al [58], Godin & Taylor [50], and Lee & Chang [59]. The classification was conducted based on the ratio between amplitudes of diurnal and semidiurnal, as shown in the following equation:…”
