Extraction of Zirconium From Iraqi Bauxite Ore

Abstract: This research is devoted to the study of the extraction of zirconium from Iraqi Bauxite Ore by using hydrometallurgical method. The chemical analysis was done to the bauxite ore by using X-ray florescence, X-ray diffraction and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Zirconium Extraction was performed via three stages; the first stage is leaching of bauxite with sodium hydroxide for alumina leaching. The second stage is leaching of zirconium species from the remained powder produced from stage one after washing with d… Show more

“…Figure ( 2 -BAU) XRD pattern of bauxite before modified Where we notice that most of the characteristic peaks of the first surface (BAU) belong to the minerals bohemite and kaolinite, and to a lesser extent both gibbsite and calcite , We also notice a great agreement in terms of the positions of the characteristic peaks of the above figure with the X-ray diffraction spectrum of bauxite clay in the study [11],Which indicates that it is this bauxite clay on the one hand, and on the other hand, we notice the sharpness and intensity of the distinctive peaks, which indicates that it is of a crystalline nature. .…”

“…Figure 1 exhibits the influence of particle size, NaOH concentration, and stirring speed on the recovery of Si from bauxite for values between (+1, -1). It can be seen that there is a gradual increase in the recovery with the increase in NaOH concentration, which is due to the excellent attack of sodium hydroxide on bauxite ore, resulting in the decomposition and disintegration of elements [1]. From Figure 1, it can be seen that the recovery increases as the particle size is decreasing, and the highest percentage of (L %) obtained is at 53 μm.…”

“…Red mud or bauxite refinery residue (BRR) is a highly hazardous residue produced during the extraction of alumina from bauxite. The global production of red mud is estimated to be over 150 million tons per year A.Muhanad [1]. Despite the existence of recycling methods, bauxite residue is discarded as waste.…”
