Extraction, partial characterization and susceptibility to Hg2+ of acid phosphatase from the microalgae Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata

Abstract: Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata is a unicellular green algae widely distributed in freshwater and soils. Due to its cosmopolitan characteristic, its use is recommended by national and international protocols in ecotoxicity studies. The alteration of phosphatase activities by agriculture pollutants like heavy metals has been extensively used as a biomarker in risk assessment and biomonitoring. In this study, we compared the extraction of acid phosphatase from P. subcapitata by different procedures and we studie… Show more

“…This metal can bioaccumulate and have severe implications in vertebrate and invertebrate organisms (Cardoso et al, 2012;Cabecinhas et al, 2015). In algae it may cause alterations in enzymatic activities and photosynthetic inhibition (Jonsson and Aoyama 2009) at concentrations in the range than those detected in interstitial water of the sediments of the Júcar River.…”

“…Heavy metals including Cd and Hg can make a bond formation with the sulfhydryl groups (-SH) of cysteine. The presence of metals can replace the hydrogen atoms -SH groups, thus inhibited the activity of enzymes [22][23]. 2.…”

“…For example, Silva et al (2009b) decided not to use a legend in a situation when most others would. Jonsson and Aoyama (2009) would have needed a legend had they used a horizontal version of the barplot instead of the vertical one, while Ambrosano et al (2009) chose the vertical barplot and so had to use the legend. Compare Figures 3 and 4, representing the same data: mean area under the disease progress curve of 16 potato clones in one environment.…”
