Extractive spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of molybdenum using thiocyanate and ethylisobutrazine hydrochloride

Abstract: An extractive spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace amounts of molybdenum in hydrochloric acid medium has been developed using potassium thiocyanate and ethylisobutrazine hydrochloride in the presence of ascorbic acid. The ternary complex that is extracted into chloroform has a molar absorptivity of 3.86 x 104 I mol-1 cm-1 at 460 nm. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range 0.05-5.6 p.p.m. The complex is stable for over 1 week. The effects of acid and reagent concentrations, time, tem… Show more

“…The reaction medium, 0.2 mol l 21 phosphoric acid, is simpler than that in other methods. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] In comparison with other spectrophotometric methods, 3,5-dibromo-4-hydroxyphenylflurone has higher sensitivity. Its molar absorptivity is 1.35 3 10 5 l mol 21 cm 21 ,which is higher than those for other reagents [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] and is three times that of phenylfluorone (see Table1).…”

“…5 Spectrophotometric methods are most commonly used for the determination of molybdenum, especially in developing countries. At present, a number of reagents [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] including Xylenol Orange, thiocyanate, chlorsulfophenol S, toluene-3,4-dithol, 2-amino-4-chlorobenzenethiol, phenylfluorone, Catechol Violet, Morin, 8-hydroxyquinoline, thiazolylazo compounds, 7,8-dihydroxy-4-methylcoumarin and Bromopyrogallol Red have been proposed for the determination of molybdenum. However, some of these reagents [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] show poor selectivity or sensitivity, and prior extraction and preconcentration steps may be required.…”
