Extracts or Active Components from Acorus gramineus Aiton for Cognitive Function Impairment: Preclinical Evidence and Possible Mechanisms

Abstract: Extracts or active components from Acorus gramineus Aiton (EAAGA) have been clinically used for cognition impairment more than hundreds of years and are still used in modern times in China and elsewhere worldwide. Previous studies reported that EAAGA improves cognition impairment in animal models. Here, we conducted a preclinical systematic review to assess the current evidence of EAAGA for cognition impairment. We searched 7 databases up until June 2019. Methodological quality for each included studies was ac… Show more

“…Can enhance cognitive function across different experimental models of cognitive impairment. The potential underlying mechanisms include antioxidant, anti-apoptosis, anti-neurotoxicity, anti-cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory effects, mitigation of Alzheimer’s disease-related pathology, synaptic protection, and the upregulation of neuronal cells through various signaling pathways ( Li et al, 2020 ; Liang et al, 2021 ; Zhang et al, 2023 ).…”

“…This study provides insight into the mechanism of astrocytic inflammatory responses and mitochondrial functions regulated by β-arrestin-biased adrenergic receptors. Adrenergic systems are well-studied prototypes for heterotrimeric GPCRs that respond to diffusible hormones and neurotransmitters, which regulate both cognitive function and immune function, and dysregulation of adrenergic tone may potentiate neuroinflammation in neurological diseases [ 39 41 ]. Our previous study and other researches found that adrenergic receptors were implicated in the pathogenesis of perioperative neurocognitive disorder [ 10 , 41 , 42 ].…”

“…It has also been shown to help increase the expression of heat shock protein 70 and reduce the volume of cerebral infraction. Houpu ( Houpoea officinalis ) and Shichangpu ( Acorus gramineus ) have also been shown to have protective effects on blood pressure in HS rat by nose inhalation ( Li et al, 2020b ). Berberine, the important component of Huangbo ( Phellodendron amurense ), was proved to be effective on suppressing the expression of heat shock protein 70 and TNF-α and decreasing body temperature of HS( Jiang et al, 2017 ).…”
