Extraintestinal Manifestations of Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Middle Eastern Patients

Abstract: Background and Aims: The Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBDs), Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC), are gastrointestinal autoimmune disorders with many Extraintestinal Manifestations (EIMs). Previously reported incidences of EIMs in IBD patients have ranged from 10% to 50%. The large variation in occurrence of EIMs has been linked to genetic predisposition. Correlations between individual EIMs are unclear. Therefore, we aim to estimate the incidence of EIMs in a Middle Eastern cohort of patients wit… Show more

“…Our data show that in 17.5% of patients with IBD that developed extraintestinal manifestations, arthropathy involvement was the most common, followed by skin manifestations and eye manifestations, similar data were reported in our country and North America [ 16 , 27 , 28 , 29 ]. A significant difference was noted in the prevalence of arthritis and osteoporosis between patients with CD and those with UC across the age groups, as shown in Table 1 .…”

“…Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are systemic diseases classified as chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (81). Periodontitis, aphthous stomatitis, and in severe cases, pyostomatitis vegetans are particularly pronounced in patients with Crohn's disease (81,82). Patients in the acute phase of the disease show a significantly higher degree of oral lesions (83).…”
