Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the larynx: Literature review and report of a case who subsequently developed acute myeloid leukemia

Abstract: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) of the larynx is an extremely rare plasma cell neoplasm outside of the bone marrow, which has not been previously well characterized. A case of laryngeal EMP who developed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) following treatment is described in the present study, as well as an extensive review of the relevant literature. An electronic literature search was performed in PubMed and all pertinent case reports and series in the English language from 1948-October 2017 were identified. A to… Show more

“…Furthermore, it underscores the efficacy of standard treatment of EMP with radiotherapy [3]. Nevertheless, based on the literature, the risk of transformation to systemic PCM is 11-30% [11]. Such systemic progression of EMP should be treated with standard chemotherapy or immunochemotherapy for PCM, and response needs to be consolidated by a high-dose melphalan with autologous stem cell transplantation in younger patients.…”

“…Extramedullary disease (EMD) at the time of diagnosis of MM is rare (0.4% to 2%) [5, 6], but during the course of the disease, as many as 13% to 30% of the patients may exhibit extramedullary involvement [7, 8]. The most common extramedullary sites of plasmacytosis are the upper respiratory tract and sinonasal region [9]. However, on reviewing the literature, it is evident that virtually any organ can be affected [7, 10].…”
