“…The distances between the Mn 2 + and F À ions are generally shorter than those between Ca 2 + and F À , thus producing stress and small distortions in the network. This may have affected the activation energies of traps involved in TL glow mechanisms [17]. It is expected that the TL intensity would be proportional to the density of CaF 2 and Ca 1 À x Mn x F 2 nano/microcrystals in the LBA glass system.…”

“…One network is composed of F À and the other is face-centered and composed of Ca 2 + ions. When CaF 2 is doped with manganese, Mn 2 + ions are incorporated and replace Ca 2 + ions because of their similar ionic radius and identical valence state [17]. Given these properties of borate glass and calcium fluoride, the principal goal of this paper was to synthesize and study the thermoluminescent properties of the new vitreous system Li 2 O-B 2 O 3 -Al 2 O 3 (LBA) doped with different concentrations of CaF 2 and Mn seeking possible applications in the area of ionizing radiation dosimetry.…”

“…It has a single TL peak around 260°C and is linear for a wide range of doses, from 0.5 mGy to few kGy. However, the TL curve depends on the Mn concentration [8]. We have shown earlier that the maximum glow curve intensity is achieved for a doping of 2.5 at.% Mn [9].…”

“…Earlier, several workers have investigated the material (CaF 2 :Mn) and tried to understand TL processes and defects (Danilkin et al, 2008;Planque, 1984;Lust, 2007;Horowitz, 1984;McKeever, 1985;McMasters et al, 1987;Danilkin et al, 2006;McKeever et al, 1986). But the lack of clear knowledge about the TL mechanism, defects formation and their instability at high temperatures showed that the system (CaF 2 :Mn) is yet to be fully understood.…”

“…But the lack of clear knowledge about the TL mechanism, defects formation and their instability at high temperatures showed that the system (CaF 2 :Mn) is yet to be fully understood. For example, Danilkin et al (2006) have studied the effect of Mn impurity concentration on TL and argued that the changes observed in TL glow peaks could be attributed to the stress generated in the crystal lattice because of the difference in ionic radii of Ca 2þ and Mn 2þ , i.e., on replacing Ca 2þ (ionic radius 1.26 Å) by Mn 2þ (ionic radius 1.10 Å), at lower concentrations but could be compensated by incorporation of more Mn 2þ at higher concentrations. They further concluded that these distortions would affect the structure of the TL glow curve by affecting the activation energies (due to changes in the stress).…”
