Extreme thrombocytosis under the treatment by amoxicillin/clavulanate

Abstract: Amoxicillin/Clavulanate related extreme thrombocytosis during the treatment of pneumonia has never been reported. We present a 54-year-old patient who was admitted due to pneumonia, and was treated with amoxicillin/clavulanate IV and 3-day course of 500 mg azithromycin. Despite clinical and radiological evidence showing that pneumonia improved, thrombocytes increased rapidly. After stopping the antibiotic, the thrombocytes returned gradually to normal. Considering the clinical course, we propose that this extr… Show more

“…Secondary thrombosis can be seen due to drugs such as beta-lactam antibiotics, G-CSF, myconazole, vinco alkaloids, iron treatment, enoxaparin, antipsychotic drugs, adrenaline, glucocorticoid, retinoic acid and quinolons [5]. To the best of our knowledge, our patient is the first SMA patient to develop thrombocytosis with Nusinersen treatment.…”

“…There are few case reports of reactive thrombocytosis with beta-lactam and beta-lactamase inhibitor combination [4][5][6]. Augmentin-induced thrombocytosis is extremely rare with so far only one case report reported as per literature [7]. Res, Vol 10, Issue 5, 2017, 15-16 Balaji et al…”

“…15 To improve the application of the data to the Naranjo probability scale, adaptations were made by adding thrombocytosis-specific criteria to improve the grading of case reports for causality, as seen in Table 2. For the purpose of this review, reports of suspected thrombocytosis were systematically assessed for causality (Table 3 16-45 ). The following criteria will be utilized to assess causality of a drug by case report: number of cases described by independent investigators and the Naranjo score associated with causality.…”
