Extrusion Enhances Metabolizable Energy and Ileal Amino Acids Digestibility of Canola Meal for Broiler Chickens

Abstract: The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of extrusion process on apparent metabolizable energy (AME), crude protein (CP) and amino acid (AA) digestibility of canola meal (CM) in broiler chickens. A total of 36, 42-day-old broilers were randomly assigned into adaptation diets (no CM or 30% CM) with six replicates. After 4 days of adaptation period, on day 47, birds were allowed to consume the assay diets that contain CM or extruded canola meal (ECM) as the sole source of energy and protein.Follo… Show more

“…These fermentation products were, however, not increased in broilers fed the RSM diets in the present study. Other factors such as the presence of antinutritional factors, glucosinolates, tannins, phytic acid, and sinapine may have resulted in the poor performance of broilers fed the RSM diets (Khajali and Slominski, 2012 ; Rutkowski et al., 2012 ; Ahmed et al., 2014 ). Reduced villus height, deeper crypts, and lower VCR in broilers fed RSM diets compared with those fed the SBM diet may be due to the aforementioned antinutritional factors.…”

“…All birds were allowed a 4-day adaptation period where they were fed a corn-soybean based diet with 30% CM (basal diet, Table 1) (Soleimani et al, 2010). Two experimental diets containing either CM or fermented CM (FCM) as the sole source of energy and protein were prepared (Table 1) (Ahmed et al, 2014;Jia et al, 2012). Both diets contained titanium dioxide (0.5%) as an indigestible marker.…”

“…Prior to diet formulation, representative samples from the corn and soybean were analysed for CP using Kjeldahl method according to the procedure of AOAC (1990) content using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) as described previously (Ahmed et al, 2014) (Table 2). Briefly, 0.1 to 0.2 g of sample was hydrolysed by 5 mL of 6N HCL at 110°C for 24 h. Afterwards, a 4 mL of internal standard (L--amino-N-butyric acid; AABA) was added to the hydrolysate (analysis of all AA except Met, Cys, and Trp).…”
