Eye fluke effects on Danish freshwater fish: Field and experimental investigations

Abstract: Eye flukes, metacercariae of digenean trematodes within the family Diplostomidae, are prevalent in freshwater fish populations. The final host, carrying the adult trematode in the gut, is a piscivorous bird; freshwater snails serve as first intermediate hosts, releasing infective cercariae; and fish act as second intermediate hosts.Species within the genus Diplostomum prefer various sites in the fish eye, such as the lens, and may reduce vision and elicit cataract in the host. Heavy infestations are associated… Show more

“…In June 2021, we selected an infected Lymnaea stagnalis pulmonate snail (morphological identification according to Glöer [ 23 ] out of 205 snails collected in the lake Bagsværd sø (55°46’16.0566", 12°27’39.6864") (Zealand, Eastern part of Denmark). Snails were allocated in individual 100-ml beakers with filtered (0.45μm) lake water for subsequent shedding procedures [ 24 ]. All beakers were then examined under the stereomicroscope; among them, two snails shed diplostomid cercariae.…”

“…All beakers were then examined under the stereomicroscope; among them, two snails shed diplostomid cercariae. These were preserved in ethanol (96%) for molecular identification, including PCR and sequencing, according to Duan et al [ 24 ]. Isolated cercariae were identified as D .…”

“…Representative genera are Diplostomum and Tylodelphys, parasites occupying the lens and corpus vitreum of the fish host, respectively. These eye flukes may severely affect vision (Duan et al, 2021), whereas other species reach maturity in mammals including humans and are thus regarded as serious zoonotic pathogens. Classic examples are Clonorchis, Opisthorchis, Metagonimus, Haplorchis, Centrocestus and Pseudamphistomum where the most effective control methods established rely on snail control in ponds and the control of infective stages in inlet water (Skov et al, 2008(Skov et al, , 2009Madsen et al, 2022).…”

“…Eyefluke infections in fish are caused by infective cercariae, released from intermediate host snails, penetrating the surfaces of fish skin, fins or gills (Duan et al ., 2021 ). If these cercariae cannot be eliminated by chemicals or mechanical filtration of water (Larsen et al ., 2005 ) it is possible to remove the intermediate host snails simply by collecting snails from ponds.…”
