“…It has been recognized for many years that CAPB is an occasional contact allergen (1, 11 -17). Specific cases of allergic contact dermatitis from CAPB have often been associated with a particular product/use of this material, including contact lens cleaners, eye make-up remover and shampoo (13,(18)(19)(20). The last-mentioned use has been implicated as a contributory factor in hand dermatitis experienced by hairdressers (15,21).…”

“…For many such products, CAPB is favored over other surfactants because it shows synergistic effects with other surfactants and thus helps to formulate products which are mild to the skin and eyes. On the other hand, concerns about CAPB have been raised recently by several papers reporting allergic contact dermatitis to CAPB in shampoos, skin cleaners, make-up removers, and contact lens solutions (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). Allergic contact dermatitis, sometimes referred to as skin sensitization, is a skin response, such as a rash, resulting from a substance's touching the skin and involving the immune system.…”

“…Beginning in the early to mid-1980s, a number of case reports and small studies appeared in the literature indicating possible allergic contact dermatitis in individuals exposed to CAPB generally through the use of shampoos, skin cleaners, and other cosmetic-related products either personally or in an occupational setting (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9). No systematic study has been undertaken to assess the prevalence of such allergy, but its occurrence is felt to be fairly rare, considering the relatively small number of individuals reported to have experienced reactions to CAPB.…”
