Fabrication and Characterisation of Stimuli Responsive Piezoelectric PVDF and Hydroxyapatite-Filled PVDF Fibrous Membranes

Abstract: Poly(vinylidene fluoride) has attracted interest from the biomaterials community owing to its stimuli responsive piezoelectric property and promising results for application in the field of tissue engineering. Here, solution blow spinning and electrospinning were employed to fabricate PVDF fibres and the variation in resultant fibre properties assessed. The proportion of piezoelectric β-phase in the solution blow spun fibres was higher than electrospun fibres. Fibre production rate was circa three times higher… Show more

“…However, it should be noted that not all nanofillers can enhance fraction of β-phase and some might inhibit the formation of β-phase. The incorporation of hydroxyapatite (HA) decreased the crystallinity and fraction of β-phase in HA/PVDF nanofibers [30]. Similar results were reported by Li et al [41] where fraction of β-phase significantly dropped with unmodified zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles mainly due to their agglomeration.…”

“…The processability of PVDF is easier because of its relatively low melting point (177 • C) and a glass transition temperature (T g ) of −35 • C. PVDF solution temperature was reported to influence the spinnability of PVDF fibers [30]. The viscosity and temperature are inversely related.…”

“…Furthermore, numerous in vivo studies support the biocompatibility of PCL [19][20][21]. Other synthetic polymers used in electrospinning include poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) [22], poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVD) [23], and poly (lactic acid) (PLA) [24]. While composite materials (e.g., PCL/collagen mixtures) are typically stronger than scaffolds composed solely of natural matrix molecules, the tensile strength of these composites rarely approaches the mechanical strength of tissues such as bone or tendon [8,12].…”
