Fabrication and characterization of Chitosan/Poly (vinyl alcohol)-co-(vinyl acetate)-co-(itaconic acid) hydrogel membranes

Abstract: A pH sensitive hydrogel was developed by freeze thaw method based on chitosan and Poly (vinyl alcohol)-co-(vinyl acetate)-co-(itaconic acid) (PVACO). The hydrogel membranes were characterized by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy, X ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical properties of the blend membranes were evaluated by tensile strength test. FTIR spectral characterization showed probable molecular interactions between the na… Show more

“…C-H vibrational stretching of alkyl groups has been observed between 3000-2840 cm -1 . A broad band at 3600-3200 cm -1 ( Figure 1a) was due to -NH symmetric vibration and -OH stretching of inter and intra-molecular hydrogen bonding [29][30][31][32] . It was also observed that the broad region between 3600-3200 cm -1 was increased in all blended films as compared to the chitosan and PVA.…”

“…PVA membranes are non-biodegradable, and the retained structure allows the space for drug release [22] [23] [24]. A saturated solution of the drug is en-Journal of Biomaterials and Nanobiotechnology trapped within the PVA membrane structure, and the drug diffuses across the hydrogel matrix when the surface of the PVA hydrogel encounters hydrophilic solution [19] [22] [25] [26]. Therefore, the PVA crystalline-like structure can be modified to control the diffusion rate of the drug via the cross-linking ratio [23] [27] [28].…”

“…The molecular chains of CS contain large numbers of amine groups [14]. Hydrogels based on CS and its derivatives often exhibit good swelling abilities in acidic environments [15][16][17][18], and such hydrogels can be used as intelligent materials.…”
