Fabrication and Characterization of Nanofibers Membranes using Electrospinning Technology for Oil Removal

Abstract: Oily wastewater is one of the most challenging streams to deal with especially if the oil exists in emulsified form. In this study, electrospinning method was used to prepare nanofiberous polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes and study their performance in oil removal. Graphene particles were embedded in the electrospun PVDF membrane to enhance the efficiency of the membranes. The prepared membranes were characterized using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to verify the graphene stabilization on the sur… Show more

“…The electrospun nanofibers have outstanding characterizations such as a vast surface area-tovolume ratio, flexibility in surface functionalities, intrinsically high porosity, fully interconnected pore structures, low hydraulic resistance, and ease of scalable synthesis 2 . Thus, electrospun nanofibers membranes (ENMs) have been used in various applications due to their unique characterizations and promising potentials such as scaffolds in tissue engineering 3 , electrical storage 4 , drug delivery 5 , and oil removal 6 . In addition, the ENMs are increasingly considered good candidates for applications that need high permeability and low energy cost.…”

“…Ceramic membranes can be prepared by several methods including slip casting, tape casting, extrusion and, powder pressing which change the particle suspension to a membrane forerunner to form symmetric and composite ceramic membranes [8][9][10][11] Many researches have established the effectiveness of these membranes in water treatment, as they are characterized by excessive chemical stability and mechanical stability and can resist different temperatures, but their preparation needs excessive attention and effort [12][13][14][15][16] .…”

“…These techniques have different disadvantages, including their high cost, the use of chemical compounds, corrosion, a low efficiency, recontamination problems, and the need for extensive land areas [ 16 , 17 ]. Emulsified oil is usually very difficult to deal with using traditional methods [ 18 ]. This is primarily because of the droplet sizes for emulsified oils, which are usually smaller than 10 µm [ 19 ] and lead to complex treatment processes [ 20 ].…”
