Fabrication and evaluation of PZT/Ag composites and functionally graded piezoelectric actuators

Abstract: Metallic Ag as the second phase was added into PZT ceramic matrix to fabricate piezoelectric composites and functionally graded actuators by gradually altering Ag concentration, aimed to improve mechanical properties and to solve possible interfacial debonding usually observed in conventional bimorph-type piezoelectric actuator. The PZT/Ag composites were obtained by directly co-firing PZT and Ag powders at 1200 • C for 1 h. The fracture strength σ f and fracture toughness K I C , as well as the corresponding … Show more

“…PZT) is used as the second phase, which is added into a metallic matrix by gradually altering the piezoelectric material concentration, as described in Refs. [15,16]. For non-FGP ultrasonic transducers only the PZT-5A piezoceramic material is used to represent the active element.…”

“…Wang [8] considered analytically the problem of mode III crack in a class of FGPMs in which the variations of the mechanical and electrical properties are proportional. In addition to the FGPM electromechanical transducers treated in [7], FGPMs as model actuators were proposed in [9]. It was recently also shown that the variation of the material properties of FGPMs can be used to design the distribution of the actuating shear stress under a piezoelectric actuator and reduce the stress concentration near the actuator edges [10].…”
