Fabrication of a copolymer flocculant and application for Cr(VI) removal

Abstract: A copolymer flocculant (CATCS) derived from starch and chitosan was fabricated and used as eco‐friendly adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution. The CATCS flocculant was characterized by scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetic analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of CATCS dosage, initial Cr(VI) concentration, pH, and reaction time on removal of Cr(VI) were discussed. The results showed CATCS removed Cr(VI) effectively and the adsorption isotherm agreed well wi… Show more

“…Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm was used to study the correlation of the equilibrium data and the system. The Langmuir isotherm is used to study the monolayer adsorption and it was calculated using the equation given below : Cnormaleqnormale=()1KnormalLqm+()1qmCe, where K L and q m are the Langmuir isotherm constant (L/mg) and adsorption capacity (mg/g), respectively. This can also be expressed as dimensionless constant separation factor ( R L ).…”

“…According to Lagergren, the rate of metal ion adsorption to the polymer adsorbent depends on the adsorption capacity. For the rate studies, the nonlinear expression of the pseudo first‐order equation as given below was used: italicdqtdt=k1()qeqt Linearised form is: ln()qeqt=lnqek1t where q t is the amount of metal ion adsorbed in millimol per gram at time t in minutes and k 1 in min −1 is the rate constant of first‐order adsorption. The value of k 1 for each metal ion complexation was calculated from the respective plot of ln (q e ‐ q t ) versus t .…”

“…Modification of such polymer materials through derivatization reactions such as methylolation, acylation, and carboxylation can significantly improve their removal effect on heavy metals [25]. You et al [26] prepared a copolymer flocculant derived from starch and chitosan, and also used it as an environmentally friendly adsorbent, with a removal rate of Cr 6+ in aqueous solutions up to 90%. Lin Meiying et al [27] prepared amino modified starch AMS by emulsion polymerization.…”
