Fabrication of Amperometric Glucose Sensor Using Glucose Oxidase-Cellulose Nanofiber Aqueous Solution

Abstract: Cellulose nanofiber aqueous solution, which remained virtually transparent for more than one week, was prepared by using the clear upper layer of diluted cellulose nanofiber solution produced by wet jet milling. Glucose oxidase (GOx) was easily dissolved in this solution and GOx-immobilized electrode was easily fabricated by simple repetitious drops of GOx-cellulose solution on the surface of a platinum-iridium electrode. Glucose sensor properties of the obtained electrodes were examined in phosphate buffer so… Show more

“…In a three-enzyme cascade reaction, PE-GA/Pt 2 catalyzes the hydrolysis of starch into glucose ( 32 ), and then, glucose oxidase (GOx) catalyzes the oxidation of glucose to hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) (Fig. 3A) ( 35 ). Last, horseradish peroxidase (HRP) catalyzes the conversion of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into colored products in the presence of H 2 O 2 , and the color of final products could be tailored by changing the pH (Fig.…”

“…This indicates the protective effects of cellulose on immobilized enzymes against chemicals [85]. Cellulose nanofiber can be dispersed into water and a similar enzyme membrane can be obtained; however, similar results for stability cannot be obtained [127]. Mesh structure would differ from the membrane indicated in Figure 6, perhaps because the cellulose nanofibers are shorter in comparison or the membrane is perturbed by enzyme incorporation.…”

“…In another study, Yasuzawa et al fabricated an amperometric glucose sensor using GOx in cellulose nanofiber aqueous solution . GOx/CNF solutions with different GOx concentrations (250 and 500 mg L −1 ) were drop cast and dried on the surface of platinum‐iridium (Pt 90%‐Ir 10%, 2.14 mm 2 ) wire electrodes.…”

[105] GOx/CNF solutions with different GOx concentrations (250 and 500 mg L −1 ) were drop cast and dried on the surface of platinum-iridium (Pt 90%-Ir 10%, 2.14 mm 2 ) wire electrodes. Although the electrodes coated with 250 and 500 mg L −1 GOx exhibited significantly rapid response (within a second) toward Reproduced with permission.…”
