Although citrates are commonly used to modify nanoparticles, attention is rarely paid to how the modification parameters affect the type of adsorption and, thus, possibly, the properties of the modified particles. The relevance of this and the significant impact it can have is demonstrated in this study by examining the effect of pH upon the modification of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) with citrate, using a citrate concentration that yields a high molecular surface density but induces almost no coordination pressure. Relying first on a number of classical surfaces analyzing methods, no clear pH‐dependent differences can be identified. Finally, the consideration of the thermally induced redox behavior gives a decisive clue to unravel the “citric acid mystery” and to put together the, until then, weak hints into an overall picture. This shows that the citrate carboxyl groups are linked to the oxidic surface pH dependently via hydrogen bonds to hydroxide groups or coordinatively to iron ions and, besides, also interact, to a certain extent, with ammonia that is used for pH adjustment. With these findings, it is finally possible to explain the observed differences when the citrate‐modified SPIONs are coated with silica (SiO2) or redispersed after spray‐drying.

We demonstrated a facile method to control magnetite clusters with different size and surface morphology by adding bifunctional diamines. First, citrate‐capped magnetites (CFe3O4) were prepared by adding citrate ions into ferrofluid during the co‐precipitation process. The resulting CFe3O4 was subsequently treated by diamine molecules with different chain lengths (C‐4, C‐8, C‐12), consequently leading to the formation of diamine‐linked magnetite aggregates (DnFe3O4) with different size and surface morphology. The longer chain length of diamines increased the particle size of DnFe3O4 due to the enhanced crosslinking between CFe3O4. The excessive addition of C‐4 and C‐12 diamines induced the significant morphological changes from irregular‐shaped CFe3O4 to spherical and rod‐shaped DnFe3O4, respectively. Furthermore, DnFe3O4 retained their initial magnetism under a strong oxidative process, implicating the potential application to recyclable catalyst or active electrode materials in Li‐ion batteries.

The aim of this report is to propose a new methodology to treat prostate cancer with macro-rod-shaped gold seeds irradiated with ultrasound and develop a new computational method for temperature and thermal dose control of hyperthermia therapy induced by the proposed procedure. A computer code representation, based on the bio-heat diffusion equation, was developed to calculate the heat deposition and temperature elevation patterns in a gold rod and in the tissue surrounding it as a result of different therapy durations and ultrasound power simulations. The numerical results computed provide quantitative information on the interaction between high-energy ultrasound, gold seeds and biological tissues and can replicate the pattern observed in experimental studies. The effect of differences in shapes and sizes of gold rod targets irradiated with ultrasound is calculated and the heat enhancement and the bio-heat transfer in tissue are analyzed.
