Fabrication of Functionally Graded Epoxy Resin with Alumina Fillers and its Simulation by Using a Centrifugal Method

Abstract: Functionally graded materials that had gradient profiles of permittivity (i.e., ε-FGMs) were fabricated from an alumina/epoxy mixture by a centrifugal method. Gradient distribution of both the packing fraction and size of the dispersed alumina fillers was confirmed by SEM images. Furthermore, a new numerical method to simulate the fabrication process was proposed based on the movement of solid particles dispersed in the viscous liquid under the centrifugal operation. In the simulation, both the cumulative prob… Show more

“…The authors have reported results of experimental work on the fabrication of ε-FGMs from an alumina/epoxy mixture by using the centrifugal method, in which non-spherical alumina fillers were used [4]. Procedure of numerical simulation of the centrifugal process was described as well, and reasonable agreements between the experimental and nnumerical properties of FGMs were indicated [4,5].…”

“…The authors are using a centrifugal method to fabricate functionally graded materials with large size from alumina-particles/epoxy-resin mixtures (1) . During the centrifugal process, drag force is one of the major forces experienced by the particles, and hence, it dominates the movement of the particles.…”

“…During the centrifugal process, drag force is one of the major forces experienced by the particles, and hence, it dominates the movement of the particles. It directly depends on the coefficiency of viscosity of the mixture, η, and consequently, precise information of η is indispensable for both the fabrication and simulation process (1) (2) . To evaluate effects of the amount and size of particles involved in the mixture on η, η of unimodal and bimodal alumina/epoxy mixtures were measured under various conditions.…”
